Join us for a fascinating evening with author and historian Sarah Clegg, celebrating her new book, Perilous Enchantment: The True History of Faeries.
In conversation with one of our booksellers, Sarah will explore the curious and often surprising history of the faeries that have beguiled, tricked, terrified, seduced and enchanted us for millennia.
From the pre-Christian creatures of classical mythology and the fairy royalty of medieval France to the witch trials, Victorian transformations and the faeries of today’s fantasy and romantasy, Perilous Enchantment traces how our ideas of the fae have changed over time, and what those changes reveal about the cultures and beliefs that created them.
Along the way, Sarah ventures to some of the world’s most fascinating faerie sites, from the Eildon Hills in Scotland and the Apennine Mountains of Italy to a magical stone circle in Cornwall, a haunted castle and mine in Germany, and even a fairy ball in Los Angeles.
Sarah will share the stories, folklore and real-world places behind the book, as well as exploring why we remain so willing to believe in, and be enchanted by, the fae in all their darkness and splendour.
Whether you’re fascinated by folklore, mythology, history or the darker side of fairy tales, this promises to be a captivating evening of stories, enchantment and the strange history of the creatures hiding at the edge of the forest.
